9/1/2005 In the Hospital After 16 Days Home

Hey everyone,
Sorry this update has taken so long. There isn't a whole lot to report. Fletcher is still in the hospital and still on the ventilator.
As you probably know we were home for 16 days and we had 14 GREAT days! We saw our pediatrician twice, our pulmonologist once and our home health nurse came to our home at least 4 times, each one excited about how well Fletcher's lungs sounded and he gained almost a pound in those 2 weeks! We were also weaning him off of Methadone and Valium, Friday was his last day for the Methadone and Saturday he had kind of a tough day, being fussy and not sleeping well. He woke up at 4:00 am Sunday choking and gagging, after that we were up every 30 minutes or so with him. The girls and I went to church and Craig and Fletcher stayed home. We thought maybe he was still going through withdrawals and needed more Methadone to help him. At 1:30 pm I went to pick him up and he was wet from head to toe with sweat and he was cold to the touch! I called our pediatrician and he told me to give Fletcher 2 breathing treatments and Methadone and if he wasn't better we needed to take him to the ER. He wasn't getting better so that evening we took him to the ER thinking they would probably send us home with more Methadone, instead they took him to the PICU and put him on the ventilator. When he got there they put him on a diuretic and his lungs looked better. We'll probably come home on the diuretics, but stronger than what we were giving him. The PICU doctor (Dr. Griggs) thinks if Fletcher could just get up to 22 pounds he would have the reserves he needs to stay healthy. But, Dr. Griggs also thinks we need to put Fletcher in a convalescent home (short term) so he would have 24 hour medical care. Craig and I do not believe putting Fletcher in a home is the answer we want him at home with us and we will do everything possible to keep him here with us. Please continue to pray for us, that we would have wisdom and discernment in the decisions we have to make about our sweet boy and for the strength it takes to care for him. And please remember the girls in your prayers and of course, for the Lord to continue to heal Fletcher. Need to go for now, we'll keep you posted.

Much love,
Craig & Denise
