Kites Home

I have flown a few kites in the past. My dad was a good kite flyer and he flew for over 20 years until he got too sick to continue. After he passed away, we were going to go through them and probably sell them or something. I was going through them to find a large kite for a kite flying friend of my dad's and began getting nostalgic seeing all them. I began imagining the time and effort (not counting money) that was tied up in these kites. I decided that I would fly each kite once before deciding what to do with them. In the process I have rekindled something in me. Here is a log of my kite flying since my father's passing.

OK. The kindling died down. I'm keeping this here for future reference. Who knows....

Date: March 22, 2011
First Flown: March 22, 2011
Description: Single line delta. After bringing home several kites from my mom and dad's house, I really wanted to put something in the air so Maddie and I flew this in our front yard. When it flies it looks like a couple of eyes looking down at you.
History: I don't know where or when my dad got this kite.
Date: April 2, 2011
First Flown: April 2, 2011
Description: I flew this at Edmond North High School with Terry and Josh Officer.
History: A kite my dad made modelled after the Fire Dart by Action Kites.
Note: The Fire Dart is widely recognized as a pivotal kite design. Designed in 1987 by Frank Fieseler and Eric Wolff, it was an extremely competent team kite, and a joy for individuals to fly as well. It was the first delta-shaped, ultra-light sport kite, significantly broadening the wind-range for any kiteflier. It was also the first mass produced sport kite using stand-offs in it's design.

Description: The first kite I set up and flew by myself. This is at Lake Hefner about the place where the whole kite thing began for my dad. Of course that was before the highway and the restaurants came along. This kite did not perform well and the sticks kept coming out on hard turns. I'm sure that there is something that can be done about that but that will have to wait.

Description: Flew this Top of the Line vented North Shore Radical VIP at Lake Hefner. The wind was around 20 mph so it wasn't real good flying conditions. Had fun with NeeNee and Maddie though.

History: Troy Gunn - "Yes, that was one of the TKO Sport Kite Team Kites (custom made colors), that your dad and us flew at an international competition on the island of Guadeloupe, in the French West Indies."

Description: Flew this Spinoff at Lake Hefner. This I believe was either the first or second kite my dad bought other than the Peter Powells he started out with. This kite did pretty good in moderate wind.

Description: Flew this one at Lake Hefner. This is one my dad made also. He had it stacked with the blue and black one pictured earlier so it had no bridle. I attempted to make a bridle for it but failed. It flew but was very unresponsive. Back to the drawing board...
