Stage actor Dinsdale Landen dies

Actor Dinsdale Landen, a veteran of British stage, TV and film, has died aged 71 after battling mouth cancer.

The actor, whose weighty theatre roles were at the centre of his career, died in his home in Fakenham, Norfolk.

Landen's acting spanned five decades and also included roles in the films Mosquito Squadron, International Velvet and Morons from Outer Space.

His TV roles included parts in All Creatures Great and Small, The Avengers, Doctor Who and Lovejoy.

Nomination

On stage, Landen appeared as Sir Toby Belch in Sir Peter Hall's production of Twelfth Night and Lancelot Gobbo in the Royal Shakespeare Company's The Merchant Of Venice.

He also earned an Olivier Award nomination for his role in Michael Frayn's West End play Alphabetical Order.

Born in Margate, Kent, Landen started in repertory theatre before breaking into television, making his TV debut playing Pip in a 1959 adaptation of Great Expectations.

He was also seen in the children's film Digby, The Biggest Dog in the World, in 1973.

He is survived by his wife, actress Jennifer Daniel.
