Trying to sell the cattle from the previous episode, the crew set down on a planet and River and Simon go into town.  While there, they are kidnapped by people that are in need of a doctor.  During the deal with the cattle buyers, Book is shot and the Serenity crew must leave to get him medical attention, leaving the lost doctor and River behind.  While helping the people of the town, it is revealed that River can "communicate" with a little girl who cannot speak.  She is proclaimed a witch and the people begin preparations for burning her at the stake.
