Wash gets resentful of his wife and Mal's relationship and decides that he wants to go on the next mission with Mal instead.  They get captured by Niska (The Train Job) and tortured.  Zoe is able to buy Wash's freedom and Mal is left behind.  The crew of the Serenity band together for a rescue attempt for Mal.  River shows a glimps of her abilities with a gun.
