Kino and her talking motorrad Hermes travel together from country to country.  Their rule it to stay no longer than three days in order to experience the country and to not forge any ties to it.  This country they visit is run by machines.  They discover that the people live apart from each other because they've developed a telepathy drug that allows them to read minds when close by.
