When Kino was a little girl and went by her true name, she lived in a country where everyone on their 12th birthday became adults.  When a traveler named Kino arrives she begins to question why she needs to undergo the procedure.  When her parents turn on her and kill the traveler, she takes the motorrad he restored and leaves.  That's how she and Hermes became acquainted.
