Ginko travels through a bamboo forest when he sees man named Kisuke.  he ask Ginko to help him out of the forest but they cannot leave.  When Ginko leaves the man he is able to exit the forest.  Ginko finds out from the villagers about the man and how he got trapped.  Thinking he knows how to help, he returns.  The tells the man of the Magaridake, a white bamboo stalk, and how it is keeping him there.  The man's wife overhears them and, wanting her husband to be happy, winds up cutting down the shoot so that he can leave.  He takes his daughter into the village but is met with frightened people and is even shunned by his sister.  He returns to the forest but the cutting of the stalk has weakened his wife and daughter.
