This episode opens with an explanation of what has happened to Earth up to this time. In the 2199, the planet Gamelon declared war on Earth. They bombarded the Earth with planet bombs causing the surface to become unlivable and forcing the people to move underground to survive. Even this was not good enough since the radiation from the bombs was slowing working its way deeper into the Earth until very soon all life on Earth would perish.
We join the Earth's defense forces at Pluto were a last ditch battle is being waged between the Gamelan fleet and the Earth fleet commanded by Captain Avatar.
During the battle, a spaceship from outside of the Solar System zooms through and heads toward Mars. It crashes just after an escape pod is jettisoned. Earth sends Derek Wildstar and Mark Venture out to investigate the crash site. They find a beautiful young woman outside the spaceship who has apparently died in the crash. She is holding some form of message capsule.
The Earth fleet dwindles to just two ships, Captain Avatar's battleship and Missile Ship 17 headed by Alex Wildstar. Avatar retreats and orders Wildstar to do the same. Wildstar refuses and hold off the Gamelan ships so that Avatar can escape. In the process, Wildstar's ship is destroyed.
Back on Mars Venture and Wildstar and ordered to board the returning battleship and head for Earth. They are to bring the information from the crashed ship back to the Earth for study.
Derek Wildstar confronts Captain Avatar about his brother's death. There seems like there might be some hard feelings but things appear to work out as Captain Avatar explains what happened. Wildstar still has problems accepting the loss of his father. On the way back from the commander's office Wildstar and Venture see Nova, a nurse, and both think that she looks a lot like the woman that crashed on Mars. That also meet Dr Sane and IQ-9 for the first time here as well.
IQ-9 informs Venture and Wildstar that the capsule has been analyzed. It is a message from Starsha from the planet Iscandar. She has sent her sister Astra to Earth to help them in defeating the Gamelans. She has included plans for a Wave Motion Engine so they can get to Iscandar and get the Cosmo DNA 148,000 light years away.
An alarm goes off as a Gamelon fighter approaches the once sunken wreckage of the Battleship Yamato. Venture and Wildstar scramble to attack but the engines overheat and they crash. On the way back to base the see the remains of the Yamato and wonder why the Gamelans are interested in it. What secret does it hide?
