A German tale.  The storyteller tells of a time in his life when he arrives in a kingdom and sees a beggar being mistreated by the cook.  He tricks the cook into making stone soup and, when he discovers the trickery, the cook takes the storyteller to the king.  The storyteller promises to tell him a different story every night for a year it payment for his life.
