The girl in the wheelchair, Mariko, has fun with Nana like a cat does with a mouse before the kill.  Kouta shows up and tries to protect Nana which angers Mariko.  She throws Nana into the water as Nyuu arrives to check on Kouta.  Before Nana goes over she touches Mariko's head with a vector.  None of the facility men can believe that these two diclonious are co-existing with humans.  Shirakawa orders Mariko to kill Lucy but she won't since she can't sense Lucy.  She also discovers that she can no longer extend her vectors.  Lucy awakens when Kouta is threatened by the soldiers there and begins a massacre.  At the house Yuka and Mayu ponder Kouta's compassion for those in need and why he feels he needs to protect others.  Seeing the carnage, Kouta remembers his time just after the carnival with his father and sister on the train.  He remembers being mad at his sister and how his young friend with horns ripped her apart right in front of him.  Realizing that Nyuu, or Lucy, is his freind from that time he tries to make her explain why she did what she did.  Bandou shows up though and Lucy takes off.  As she's leaving she asks Kouta to meet her at the stone steps.
