Publication Information

Author: Brian Hayles
Cover artist: Chris Achilleos
Publishing date: March 1976
Episode Information
TV serial: The Ice Warriors
Writer: Brian Hayles
Transmission Dates: 11th November - 16th December 1967 (6 episodes)
Fact and Findings
This was Hayles' second and last Who novel, following on from Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon, and also featuring the Ice Warriors. His adaptation of his BBC television script The Moon Stallion was published by Mirror Books in 1978. The serial starred Sarah (Nyssa) Sutton who was featured on the book cover, and David (Pangol - The Leisure Hive) Haig.

Classic chapter title - On the Brink of Destruction! (the only contender for exclamation points).

First edition cover price - 40p

Later editions were numbered 33 in the Doctor Who library.

The original edition was published by Tandem (ISBN 0 426 10866 3). It was reprinted in 1978 with an amended cover (red logo) by W. H. Allen / Wyndham, priced 60p. The third impression was printed in 1980 by W. H. Allen (85p). It was reprinted in 1982 and again in 1984 (£1.35). The ISBN was retained throughout.

A hardback was also released in March 1976, published by Allan Wingate Ltd.  The ISBN was 8 5523 066 5 and it cost £2.25. The dustjacket cover featured the same Achilleos artwork with a white spine.

Brian Hayles died in October 1978, leaving his two other Ice Warriors stories and The Smugglers to be adapted by Terrance Dicks, whilst The Celestial Toymaker was novelised by Gerry Davis and Alison Bingeman, largely due to Davis having rewritten so much of the script as story editor.
Cover Data
The Chris Achilleos cover depicts Victoria being threatened by Varga, the Ice Warrior. It was reused by Target on their next editions with just changes to the logo colouring (red in 1978, blue in 1980) and cover style (no border by 1980).

This was the only cover artwork ever produced for Doctor Who and the Ice Warriors.

It was the first book not to feature the Doctor anywhere on the cover (Doctor Who and the Tenth Planet does not have the first Doctor on the front, but he is on the back of the original edition). The BBC and Target decided that policy would be only to feature the current TV Doctor on the covers and this was introduced gradually over the next couple of years.

The only change to the cover was the substitution of a blue logo and the loss of the black border in 1979.
Reviews
"The story translates well to the page - although the emphasis here is more on action than prose - whilst Varga is characterised superbly, his warriors are just that, extras in the background to do the killing and little else... The Ice Warriors is a superb book for characters though even the computer - for some reason called ECCO here - seems to get a character and one feels quite sorry when it has its nervous breakdown."
- Gary Russell, 'The Official Doctor Who Magazine' (number 94), November 1984

BRIAN HAYLES

Brian Hayles was born in Portsmouth in 1931. He trained as a sculptor and taught art for some years before becoming a full-time writer for television and radio. He contributed TV scripts to Public Eye, The Regiment, Z-Cars, Out of the Unknown and Doomwatch amongst others.

He wrote six Doctor Who adventures in the 1960s and 1970s (The Celestial Toymaker, The Smugglers, The Ice Warriors, The Seeds of Death, The Curse of Peladon and The Monster of Peladon). Two of these he adapted for Target books.

Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon
Doctor Who and the Ice Warriors

As well as script-writing for long-running BBC Radio 4 soap The Archers, Hayles also wrote a novel based on lives in the fictional village of Ambridge between the World Wars. Spring at Brookfield was published in 1975, in hardback by Allan Wingate and in paperback by Target books' parent-publisher Tandem. The book was rejacketed later when the company was owned by Wyndham.
  • On Target was a website dedicated to the Target Novelizations of Doctor Who and had a lot of information on each book.
  • I cannot find it anywhere on the web now so I have used the Wayback Machine to get information for these books.
  • I originally had permission to use covers from On Target, for books that I do not own, on this site.
  • Anything that idicates that a book is owned within the "On Target" section is referring to the owner of that site and not to my library.
  • This is currently unfinished, but a work in progress...

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
