When Sarah called on the Doctor early next morning, she found him hard at work in his laboratory.  0n one of the benches, he had rigged up a riot of wires and condensers, connected at one end to a little monitor screen, and at the other to the blue crystal from Metebelis Three.

Thinking over the baffling events of the previous day, the Doctor had realised first that the crystal was somehow at the centre of things, and second that he didn't know nearly enough about it.  He'd taken the crystal from Metebelis to study it, having searched carefully for a jewel with exactly the right characteristics.  But although he had sometimes made use of the crystal's strange powers, he had never really investigated it properly.  On a sudden impulse, he had given it to Jo Grant for her wedding present, she had taken it to South America, and then he'd forgotten all about it.

Now, eager to make up for lost time, the Dotor was subjecting the crystal to a full electronic analysis, with the aid of one of his own inimitable lash-ups of improvised scientific equipment.

Eagerly, Sarah poured out the whole story of her trip to the monastery.  The Doctor appeared to be listening keenly, nodding his head intelligently from time to time, and encouraging her to continue with occasional 'ums and 'ahs'.  She came to the end of her story, and looked at him expectantly.  'Fascinating !' he said.  'Absolutely fascinating!'

Sarah smiled, pleased that the Doctor didn't think she'd been wasting his time.  The Doctor looked up at her and said solemnly, 'The crystal lattice is absolutely balanced, right and left.'

Sarah groaned, realising he hadn't heard a single word of her story.  The Doctor looked at her, puzzled because she didn't seem to share his pleasure.  'It's a scientific pun,' he explained.  'Coherent thought!'

'Doctor!  What about this man Lupton?  What about this giant spider that jumped on his back and vanished?'

The Doctor stared vacantly at her for a moment and then said thoughtfully:

'It's probably analagous to the laser...'  He bent over his apparatus and adjusted controls.  Blue sparks flickered round the crystal, and a complicated pattern of wave-traces flickered across the screen.

Sarah glared at his back, tempted to crown him with one of his own bunsen burners.  Suddenly, the Doctor looked up at her an said urgently, 'Spiders?  Did you say spiders??  Giant spiders?'

Sarah nodded weakly.

The Doctor came up to her and put his hands on her shoulders, his face very grave.  'Now, Sarah,' he said solemnly, 'I want you to tell me the whole story, right from the beginning.'

Sarah sighed, and started all over again.  'Well, I got this call from Mike Yates - he was down at this meditation centre place...'

Corporal Hodges, Unit Transport Section, gave the Doctor's new car a wipe with a damp cloth, and stepped back to admire his work.  He always enjoyed looking after the Doctor's personal transport.  Like the Doctor himself, it had character.  First there had been Bessie, the old Edwardian roadster with the amazing turn of speed.  Now there was this new car.  Well, you couldn't exactly call it a car.  More like a cross between a flying saucer and a hovercraft.

A PLANET RULED BY SPIDERS...

When Jo Grant left the Doctor he gave her the crystal that he found on the planet Metebelis 3. But that crystal is vital to the giant spiders who rule the planet, and now they send an emissary to Earth to recover it. The Doctor and Sarah are sent to Metebelis 3 to lead an uprising of human slaves against these hideous monsters…

Doctor Who - Planet of the Spiders was the last story to feature Jon Pertwee in the role of the Doctor and was written by Robert Sloman.  This adaptation is by Terrance Dicks, who was script editor of the series for five years.

Doctor Who - Planet of the Spiders is available as a BBC Video.

Fact and Findings
The book features a prologue in which one-time UNIT member Jo Jones (née Grant), on a South American jungle expedition with her husband, sends the blue Metebelis crystal back to the Doctor. When the video eventually came out, it was disappointing (but not really surprising) to discover the scene never existed in the TV original.

The TV character Land becomes Lands in the book.

Later editions were numbered 48 in the Doctor Who library.

First edition cover price - 35p

Classic chapter title: The Deadly Experiment

The original edition was published by Tandem (ISBN 0 426 10655 5). It was reprinted in 1978 with a new cover, and 1979, by W. H. Allen / Wyndham. The ISBN was still 0 426 10655 5. It was rejacketed, reprinted and retitled for a final time, in August 1991, as Doctor Who - Planet of the Spiders. The ISBN was retained and the publishers were Virgin, the cover price was £2.50.

A hardback edition also came out in October 1975, published by Wingate and Tandem. This marked the first in the long run of hardback releases - up to and including The Smugglers in 1988 (hardbacks for Doctor Who and the Auton Invasion and Doctor Who and the Cave-Monsters were the only previous releases from the Target range). A second impression was released in 1977 by Wingate, ISBN 855 23 052 5, priced £2.95. For a full version of the stories of the hardbacks, see Jason Shron's excellent site listed in links.
Cover Data
The final cover from Peter Brookes. There is a satisfying circularity to his work, beginning as it did with Tom Baker's debut story and ending with Pertwee's last.

Alun Hood's cover replaced that of Brookes from September 1978. It was itself replaced by Alister Pearson's cover in August 1991.
Reviews
"If you recall, on TV the Great One proved her might by making the Doctor march round in a circle. She shrieked: "Is that fear I can feel in your mind, Doctor? You are not accustomed to feeling frightened are you?" This was one of the most important events in the story - but Terrance, for some unearthly reason, just missed it out and had the Doctor running from the Great One for no real cause. Though I must add, I liked the way he added the 'afterthought': The Great One was mad. None of those awful illustrations in this one, I'm pleased to say."

  • On Target was a website dedicated to the Target Novelizations of Doctor Who and had a lot of information on each book.
  • I cannot find it anywhere on the web now so I have used the Wayback Machine to get information for these books.
  • I originally had permission to use covers from On Target, for books that I do not own, on this site.
  • Anything that idicates that a book is owned within the "On Target" section is referring to the owner of that site and not to my library.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
