The castle of Sir Edward Fitzroy lay on the other side of the forest.  It was a handsome, well-cared-for building, very different from Irongron's scruffy little stronghold.  The grey stone battlements of the castle towered high above the tree tops.  Three of the castle's four walls were protected by a broad semi-circular moat while the fourth backed on to the forest.

But for all its impressive appearance, Sir Edward's castle was no more than a hollow shell.  A castle of this size needed a large garrison to defend it - and Sir Edward had only a few old men and boys at his command.

Tall and frail, still wasted by the fever he had brought back from the Holy Land, Sir Edward sat in his private chamber, patiently waiting for his wife to run out of words.

It was a considerable wait.  The Lady Eleanor was a woman of spirit, and she had never lacked the ability to express her feelings.  Her subject this morning, as on many others, was the robber Irongron.  'How long, Edward?' she demanded.  'How long will you tolerate this upstart, this robbing usurper as our neighbour?  He robs, he pillages, he murders...  He flouts your authority every day - the authority which comes from the King!

Sir Edward sighed.  'Unfortunately the King who gave me my authority has deprived me of the troops I need to maintain it.'

'Irongron's band is small.  We still have Hal the archer, and a few men-at-arms.'

'Too few to stand against Irongron and his cut-throats.  But never fear, my lady, I shall act against Irongron.  I have done so this very day.'

'How so, my lord?'

Sir Edward rose painfully and went to the window, staring out over the endless vista of waving treetops.  'I have sent Eric, my squire, with a letter to old Lord Salisbury.  Like myself Salisbury has but a handful of men.  Yet if our men are combined, they may yet make a force that will crush this Irongron.'

Lady Eleanor doubted that they would do any such thing.  Moreover Lord Salisbury had troubles of his own, and was unlikely to concern himself with the problems of his neighbour.  She looked at Sir Edward's hopeful face, and decided to keep her doubts to herself.  'You will excuse me, my lord?  I have much to do.'

As she made her way down to the castle kitchen, Lady Eleanor's mind was filled with concern for her husband.  He was a simple man, brave and honourable, but he had sacrificed his health in the service of his King.  Now, in his weakened state, he lacked the ruthlessness needed to deal with such rogues as Irongron.

'IT WAS THE DEVIL'S WORK, CAPTAIN... THIS WIZARD THEY CALL THE DOCTOR THREW ALL THE FIRES AND STENCHES OF HELL AT US!'

Linx, the Sontaran Warrior, crash-lands his space-craft on Earth after being crippled by an inter-stellar battle with the Rutans. Unfortunately for him, he's landed in Medieval Wessex, where life is primitive and the technology to repair his ship hasn't been invented yet. He allies himself with the local bandit-chief Irongron, and builds a crude time-machine in order to snatch the people and equipment he needs from the twentieth century. Meanwhile, the Doctor, who is searching for these missing scientists, transports himself and Sarah Jane to their place of capture - the foul medieval lair of Irongron's castle, where the axe meets the ray-gun, in the hostile environment of the Middle Ages.

Publication Information
Author: Terrance Dicks and Robert Holmes
Cover artist: Roy Knipe / Alister Pearson (1993)
Publishing date: 29th June 1978
Episode Information
TV serial: The Time Warrior
Writer: Robert Holmes
Transmission Dates: 15th December 1973 - 5th January 1974 (4 episodes)
Fact and Findings
This was the first time Holmes attempted to novelise one of his own scripts but he only got part way through the first episode before throwing in the towel and handing the project over to Dicks who had been script editor for the TV serial. The opening prologue to the book is all that remains of Holmes' effort. In the end the only adaptation completed by Holmes was his version of The Two Doctors.

First edition cover price - 60p

Classic chapter title: A Shock for Sarah

A hardback edition from W. H. Allen was also released in June 1978.

A Longbow Children's Book hardback edition from W. H. Allen was also released in June 1978. It featured the same Knipe artwork on a white dustjacket. The ISBN was 0 491 02413 4 and it cost £2.95.

Later editions were numbered 65 in the Doctor Who library.

The first edition from Target was printed by Wyndham / W. H. Allen, ISBN 0 426 20023 3. It was reprinted in 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1984. The novel was reissued for a final time, with a new cover by Alister Pearson, on the 17th June 1993. The title for this final edition was adjusted to Doctor Who - The Time Warrior, and the cover price was £3.50. The ISBN was retained.
Cover Data
Knipe's cover was so realistic that I found it hard to believe it wasn't a photograph. It was replaced by Pearson's version in June 1993. This final cover features Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith (for whom this is her debut story), David Daker as Irongron and Kevin Lindsay as Linx, the Sontaran.
Reviews
"I thought that this was one of the best books that Mr Dicks has ever written. The details were amazingly accurate and I liked the prologue of how Linx was forced to land on Earth."

  • On Target was a website dedicated to the Target Novelizations of Doctor Who and had a lot of information on each book.
  • I cannot find it anywhere on the web now so I have used the Wayback Machine to get information for these books.
  • I originally had permission to use covers from On Target, for books that I do not own, on this site.
  • Anything that idicates that a book is owned within the "On Target" section is referring to the owner of that site and not to my library.
  • This is currently unfinished, but a work in progress...

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
