Although neither of them realised it, this was in its way as historic an encounter as that between Stanley and Doctor Livingstone.  Promoted to Brigadier, Lethbridge-Stewart would one day lead the Brritish section of an organisation called UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), set up to fight alien attacks on the planet Earth.  The Doctor, changed in appearance and temporarily exiled to Earth was to become UNIT'S Scientific Adviser.  But that was all in the future.  For the moment the two friends-to-be glared at each other in mutual suspicion.

'Never mind how I got here,' said the Doctor impatiently.  'You wouldn't believe me if I told you.  The important thing is that there are Yeti in these tunnels.  They're robot servants of an alien entity called the Great Intelligence.  We must warn the Authorities at once.'

Lethbridge-Stewart's revolver, which he had lowered on seeing the Doctor's harmless appearance, was raised to cover him once more.  'The Authorities already know about the Yeti, Doctor.  But not, it seems, as much as you do.  I think you'd better come with me.'

Professor Travers's laboratory had originally been an army workshop.  Now the heavy machinery had been cleared away and the benches were loaded with a complex array of electronic equipment.  Travers was hard at work.  Having discovered, more or less by accident, how to activate a control sphere, he was reversing the direction of his researches, and trying to find a means of jamming these inside the Yeti.  If he could manage this, he would be able to render the Yeti harmless.

Absorbed in his work he didn't notice his daughter Anne come in.  She had to speak twice before he looked up and grunted,  'What is it?  You can see I'm busy.'  Suddenly he remembered.  'Oh yes.  How did the demolition go?'

'Apparently it didn't!  Captain Knight has sent some men to investigate.  I didn't come about that, Father.  The soldiers found two youngsters in the tunnels.  I've just been talking to them.  They seem to know a great deal about the Yeti.  They know they're robots, they know about the control spheres.  And they talked about something called the Intelligence, which first appeared in Tibet.'

Travers put down the control sphere he was working on.  'I think you'd better take me to see them.'

Jamie and Victoria stood up as Anne and Travers came into the Common Room.  Travers didn't speak.  He just stood staring in utter disbelief.  A small dark girl and a boy in Highland dress.  The Doctor's two companions - Travers remembered meeting them on the snowy mountain path outside Det-Sen Monastery, remembered the incredible adventures they had shared.  Now they were here, over forty years later - but looking exactly the same.

Forty years the Yeti had been quiet. A collector's item in a museum. Then without warning it awoke - and savagely murdered.

At about the same time patches of mist began to appear in Central London. People who lingered anytime in the mist were found dead, their faces smothered in cobwebs. The cobweb seeped down, penetrating the Underground System. Slowly it spread...

Then the Yeti reappeared, roaming the misty streets and cobwebbed tunnels, killing everyone in their path. Central London was gripped tight in a Web of Fear...

Then the Yeti reappear, not just one but hordes, roaming the misty streets and cobwebbed tunnels, killing everyone in their path. Fact and Findings
Later editions were numbered 72 in the Doctor Who library.

The novel is a sequel to Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowmen.

In the novel we witness the Doctor's first meeting with Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, which actually happens off screen in the television version.

Classic chapter title - The Terror of the Web

Only a score of 1/14 on the exclamatiometer!

First edition cover price - 45p

ISBN 0426 11084 6 for all Target paperback editions.

This was the first book released under the Target label by Wyndham Publications. A second impression was released in 1978 (Wyndham, 60p, amended cover with a blue logo and white spine). It was released again in 1979 (Wyndham, 75p). The 1983 edition was rejacketed and published by W. H. Allen. It was reprinted in 1984 (£1.35, spine numbered) and these contents were re-covered in the late eighties, priced £1.95 (curiously the spine was not numbered but the new Target logo was in place). The novelisation was published for the last time on the 2nd of December 1993 by Virgin Publishing. (The title was altered to Doctor Who - The Web of Fear.) It was priced £3.50 and the ISBN was the same.

The hardback was released simultaneously by Allan Wingate. Another hardback followed in 1978, published by W. H. Allen. This latter edition had ISBN 0 491 02184 4 and cost £2.95. It featured the Achilleos artwork with the purple curved logo and had a text-less white back cover.

In 1977, Book Club Associates released a hardback compilation of Doctor Who and the Web of Fear, Doctor Who and the Revenge of the Cybermen and Doctor Who and the Space War, entitled The Doctor Who Omnibus, available only through book clubs.

One of the top sellers in the series, according to Peter Darvill-Evans' list, compiled in 1991. It went on to sell almost 100,000 units.

The unofficial Great Intelligence Trilogy was concluded in the video spin-off Downtime which was adapted into a novel by script writer Marc Platt (writer of seventh Doctor serial Ghost Light) and released as one of Virgin's Missing Adventures. The story featured Victoria Waterfield and Professor Travers from both previous adventures and Lethbridge-Stewart from Web.
Cover Data
Achilleos' cover was reprinted in 1978 with a blue logo. The back cover was white instead of purple.

The original book cover was part of Doctor Who Portfolio No. 1 issued in May 1986. There were five prints in all. Each print was 295mm by 422mm and produced on high quality art paper. The cost was £5.95.

A larger version of Achilleos's artwork appears in David J. Howe's book Timeframe (Virgin Publishing Ltd, 1993).

His 1983 version is one of Skilleter's all-time favourite covers.

Alister Pearson's cover artwork for the 1993 reprint was released as a postcard, free with 'Doctor Who Magazine' (number 203), September 1993.
Reviews
"This was a favourite of mine back in the Pat Troughton days of Doctor Who, but it didn't seem to come alive on paper...
Mr Dicks seemed to play down the mystery surrounding the identity of the Intelligence which was one of the major attributes of the story.
If you haven't read the book I won't give anything away, but there is one major clue evident as soon as you buy the book - and please buy it. It was worth the 45p just to relive memories of one of the best of Pat Troughton's Doctor Who stories."
- Keith Miller, 'Doctor Who Digest' (volume 1, number 2), September 1976

"I particularly liked the references to the fact that Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart would one day become a firm friend of the Doctor's... Another nice point was the Colonel at the end of the book thinking about sending a memorandum to the Government about forming an Intelligence Task Force to deal with the sort of thing like the Yeti invasion."
- Jan Vincent-Rudzki, 'Tardis' (number 10), September 1976

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
