For Kat, who washed dishes
so I could write this book.
In the days before man traveled space, there were those who sat in elegant control rooms, guiding satellites into orbit or giant robots to construct buildings or master computers to affect decisions across a continent or a world.

Those who have actually fought in the arena have the freedom of the City, I discover; I ask permission, readily given, to visit my patron.

She welcomes me with an embrace and a kiss; I am more aware of the meaning  of this now.  She offers me refreshment; iced fruits and a cool drink.  I still have not learned to enjoy the overpowering taste of the wine, but I nibble at the fruits with real enjoyment.

"When are you to fight again?" she asks me, and I remind her of the special games only ten dals from now.  "After today I will be training very hard," I tell her, not without guile, "and I will not see you again till after the games."

"I shall miss you," she says unprompted, and I realize that she has given me the opening Beizun told me how to recognize.

"Mistress -"

She interrupts.  "Will you not call me Ifania?"

"Ifania, then.  I was told you were seeking to build a tammarim of your own fighters -" and here I hesitate, but immediately she understands.

"Then we could be together as much as we wished," she says at once.  "Would that please you, my beautiful one?"

Beizun has told me how to meet this, too.

"If we were always together, Ifania, you would grow tired of me.  It is better as it is."  And I pick up a peach and bite into its juicy, icy coldness, looking away from her.

"Never," she says.  "But have you no friend or lover in the House of Fate, among the Akharet's fighters?"

"I have no lover," I say with conviction.

"And yet many of the men there are handsome and perfect -"

"I swear, lady, no man has touched me, or shall while I am whole and able to defend myself."

"Is this true?" she asks again, and again I reassure her.

"And it is possible for a woman to remain chaste while living among men?"

"For an ordinary woman, perhaps not; but I am a fighter and they know how well I can defend myself."

"I believe you," she says.  "And what would you say if I told you I had chosen you for the first of my tammarim of fighters?  The Akharet is a kinsman of mine; I am sure he would agree to your sale.  Shall I entreat him for permission to purchase you from the House of Fate?"

WARRIOR WOMAN

They called her Zadieyek of Gyre, which meant "dreaded woman."  She was a fighter, dangerous to confront.  Dreaded.  The distant city of Gyre trained such women, so they thought she came from there and called her Zadieyek of Gyre.

If she had a real name and a true birthplace, she could not remember them.  Her life had apparently begun with her sale to the Arena for a short brief stardom fighting vicious men and savage beasts.

Because she was truly a skilled gladiator, she became an object of value.  Bids were made for her body, by those who wanted a winner - or a valued slave.  For herself, she was determined to get to Gyre. to find her freedom and her heritage.  This is her story - a mystery of fiery passions, of fierce conflict and forbidden ambitions - and the flickering memory of alien wonders and unearthly things.

A shocker by the author of THENDARA HOUSE and THE MISTS OF AVALON.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my goodreads icon goodreads page. I almost never do reviews, but I use this site to catalogue books.
See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
