into an affair of the heart,

In our own ways, we all feed our sheep.
It was the spring of 905, half a year since the crowning of Cinhil Haldane at Valoret; half a year since the last Deryni king, Imre of Fesil, had been deposed and defeated by Cinhil's new-won magic; since Imre's sister Ariella, heavy with his child, had fled the halls of Valoret to seek sanctuary with the hosts of Torenth to the east.

"And God bless you, Sire," said Camber of Culdi, as the king moved away in his glowing sphere of torchlight.

The royal army rode through the night, and hrough the dawn, and well into the forenoon, accompanied by a steady drizzle.  Though the rain was not as heavy as it had been, still it soaked the horses and it soaked the men, and eventually soaked even and the great lords in their oiled cloaks of leather and fur.  Damp horses and men steamed in the watery sunshine as the sun rose higher in the summer sky.

They stopped just before noon to rest the men and to feed and water the horses, having traversed nearly the half of Gwynedd in their march toward the border.  Though the pace had been stiff, however, not even the foot soldiers were unduly wearied; Imre had at least left a legacy of well-trained and conditioned men.  It was their present king who was feeling the worst effects of the journey.

Cinhil's every muscle ached with the slightest movement, and tortured thighs and buttocks had long since lost their ability to torment him to any greater degree.  Still ill accustomed to riding any great distance, though his general horsemanship had improved considerably, Cinhil had tried to catch what jolting sleep he could during the night, when the horses walked, knowing that those whose job it was would keep his horse with the others.  But every session of trotting would jar his entire body anew.  Compared to that, the few times of travel at the canter were sheerest bliss.

When they had stopped, Cinhil sat his horse unmoving for several seconds, wondering whether he still had the strength to swing down from the saddle without out falling.  He could not delay too long, for Jebediah and his lieutenants were dismounting all around him, and Cinhil knew that someone would be there shortly to take his horse.

He saw Guaire make his way among the other milling men and animals and approach, to lay his hand Cinhil's reins.  The young lord's earnest, human face was upturned in genuine sympathy.

"Do you need assistance, Sire?"

With a sigh, Cinhil shook his head and started to dismount, the sigh turning to groan as he tried to swing his right leg clear of the high cantle.  He succeeded, but his face was white with the effort by the time he got on the ground, his legs trembling beneath him as he supported himself briefly against the stirrup.

"Are you all right, Sire?"  Guaire asked.

"I'm fine," Cinhil whispered.

The area in his immediate vicinity was clearing rapidly, as his companions led their horses away to be watered, and almost before he realized, Sorle was beside him and unfolding a portable stool.  As soon as its legs were seated in the muddy grass, Cinhil sank down gratefully, stretching out first one leg and then the other, wincing as cramped muscles protested.  Guaire took his horse away, and Cinhil closed his eyes and tried to make himself relax.  When he looked up again, Rhys was crouching beside him with bread and cheese and a cup of wine.  The Healer looked tired but relaxed as he put the cup in Cinhil s hand.

"Drink, Sire.  A little food and wine will help revive you."

THE FINAL
SACRIFICE

Camber of Culdi, master of arcane Deryni powers, should have been content.  When Imre's evil reign threatened to destroy the Kingdom of Gwynedd, Camber had led the successful revolt against him and had found the last heir of the human kings to replace him.  With the crowning of Cinhil, Camber's work should have been done.

But now Ariella, sister of the dead Imre, was plotting war against Cinhil.  Only Camber could thwart her evil spells.  Only Camber could guide Cinhil to unite human and Deryni forces.

Cinhil, however, was in no mood to heed Camber's advice.  He was bitter and angry with Camber for having snatched him from his monastic cell and thrust him into this struggle for power.

There seemed no hope for Gwynedd unless Camber could end the resentment of the King against him.  And the only way to accomplish that was for Camber of Culdi to die!

Birth: 18 Oct 1944 Coral Gables, Florida, USA
Notes:
From About the Author in Bishop's Heir:

Katherine Kurtz was awarded a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Miami and attended medical school for a year before deciding she would rather write about medicine than practice it.  She earned an M.A. in medieval English history from UCLA while writing her first two novels, and worked as an instructional designer for the Los Angeles Police Academy for the next ten years.  She is also a professionally trained hypnotist, an avid horsewoman, and an avowed cat person.  She has a husband who wears kilts, a ten-year-old son named Cameron, a vintage Bentley motorcar once owned by HRH the Duke of Kent, and hopes soon to live in a castle in Ireland.  Besides the Deryni Trilogy, the Camber Trilogy, and several short stories set in the Deryni universe, she has recently published a World War II thriller, Lammas Night, dealing with magic worked to keep Hitler from invading England in the summer of 1940.  She is currently at work on the second and third books of the Histories of King Kelson, with at least two more trilogies planned.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
