A HOLIDAY FOR THE DOCTOR
EPISODES WHERE A REGULAR DOESN'T APPEAR

This list is concerned mainly with the 1960s, when episodes were recorded individually, and in very long stretches.  This meant that regular artists were guaranteed a certain number of weeks off in a season, which were covered for either by writing them out, or pre-filming short sequences in advance.  Any later instances are for different reasons.  We have not included examples of semi-regulars who were often absent for narrative reasons (the best examples being the main UNIT personnel).

  • William Hartnell - The Keys of Marinus episodes 3 and 4
The Doctor disappears for two weeks, purportedly hurrying on to Millenius.  (Note that Hartnell's contract specified that he be credited no matter what, hence his presence in the end roller captions and Radio Times listings for episodes he missed.)
  • Carole Ann Ford - The Aztecs episodes 2 and 3
Susan appears briefly on film only.
  • Jacqueline Hill - The Sensorites episodes 4 and 5
Barbara stays on the spaceship when everyone else goes down to the Sense Sphere, following only in episode 6.
  • William Russell - The Reign of Terror episodes 2 and 3
Ian is locked in a cell for two weeks, appearing only on film.  He does feature in the trial scene with Susan and Barbara, but is careful to stand well apart from them - as they are not on film.
  • William Hartnell -  The Dalek Invasion of Earth episode 4
An unscheduled absence, as Hartnell was involved in an accident on set.  Although not badly hurt, he had a week's leave, and was doubled for by Edmund Warwick (although the Doctor loses consciousness almost at once).
  • Jacqueline Hill - The Web Planet episode 3
A week off as Barbara is imprisoned in the Crater of Needles, unseen.
  • William Russell - The Crusade episode 3
Ian goes off through the desert in search of Barbara and is waylaid by bandits... on film.
  • William Hartnell - The Space Museum episode 3
Frozen by the Moroks (ouch!) as preparation for being put into the eponymous archive, Hartnell only appears as a telerecorded recap from episode 2.
  • William Hartnell - The Time Meddler episode 2
Imprisoned by the Monk, the Doctor makes his Presence felt Only as a telerecorded insert of the end of episode 1, and an unseen but briefly vocal presence throwing his breakfast back at his captor.
  • William Hartnell, Peter Purves and Maureen O'Brien - Dalek Cutaway
The regulars being contractually unobliged to appear in this extra episode tacked onto the programme's second recording block, the stars of the show were for one week the Daleks, plus Edward de Souza as space agent Marc Cory.  Confusingly, (but, contractually), Hartnell was still credited.
  • William Hartnell - The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve episode 2
Hartnell appears briefly in this episode on film and as the Abbot of Amboise, not the Doctor (although we are led to believe they are one and the same).  Hartnell is in episode 3, but again the Doctor isn't.
  • William Hartnell - The Celestial Toymaker
The Doctor is made invisible and voiceless, and so appears only as a silent hand in episode 3, playing the Trilogic Game (and its not Hartnell's hand, but extra, Albert Ward's).  Hartnell's appearance in episode 2 is on film also.
  • William Hartnell - The Savages episode 3
An honorary; but not actual, absence.  Having had his life essence drained and put into Jano, the Doctor has no lines and precious little to do in this episode, being guided around by Steven and Dodo for the most part.  Frederick Jaeger gets to do his Hartnell impression instead.

LISTS

Inside this book, not surprisingly, you will find over 150 lists of information and trivia about Doctor Who, from everyone who has played the Doctor to the crimes of the Master, from the rooms in the TARDIS to spin-off productions.

The book covers all aspects of televised Doctor Who, handily subdivided into four convenient sections:

PRODUCTION
Find out how many people played Jo Grant on screen, which actors were used over again by the same directors and much more!

TRIVIA
References to the toilet in Doctor Who, appearances of bicycles, even how many times tea has appeared in the television series!

NARRATIVE
Lists include the times the Doctor and friends have fallen asleep, the many disguises the Doctor has adopted on his travels and lots more!

THE BASICS
Including the correct nomenclature for each episode as given on screen!

If you have ever pondered such burning issues, here at last is the book to set the record straight.  Essential reading for Doctor Who fans, trivia buffs, quiz compilers and people just looking for something out of the ordinary to leave on the coffee table.

I picked this book up at Cantebury's.  They specialize in British foods and other items.  I also got some jelly babies and some ginger beer at the same time.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
