Near makes himself known to Light and also the fact that he knows the new L is an imposter.  He agrees to help Light rescue Sayu.  Sayu is being held by Mello and Sachiko plans to take the Death Note for her ransom.  Light thinks he's got things under control but Mello is too cunning and winds up in possession of the notebook even though Sayu is set free.
