Codex Alera*   See series as if on a bookshelf
A series of novels by Jim Butcher.  To my understanding - supposedly these books sprang from a debate over what was better in a story, great character development or a unique story idea.  Jim Butcher asked for two known story ideas and he said he would make an interesting story out of them using character development.

1) Furies of Calderon
2) Academ's Fury
3) Cursor's Fury
4) Captain's Fury
5) Princep's Fury
6) First Lord's Fury
For my Angel. For everything
Amara soared down in a slow, gradual descent through cold, heavy rain as she neared the camp of the Crown Legion.
May contain spoilers
The invasion might have been turned back, the rebel High Lord put down, but it seemed obvious to Isana now that those had only been the first eddies of the winds of change - and that the storm was just beginning.

In his acclaimed Codex Alera novels, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher has created a fascinating world of elemental magic. Now, as enemies become allies, and friends become bitter foes, a danger beyond reckoning looms for all...

After two years of bitter conflict with the hordes of invading Canim warriors, Tavi of Calderon, now captain of the First Aleran Legion, realizes that a peril far greater than the Canim exists - the mysterious threat that drove the savage Canim to flee their homeland.

Tavi proposes attempting an alliance with the Canim against their common foe, but his warnings go unheeded.  For the Senate’s newly appointed military commander has long desired to wipe out the Canim “scourge,” and their slave allies.

Now, Tavi must find a way to overcome centuries-old animosities if an alliance is to be forged, and he must lead his legion in defiance of the law, against friend and foe - or none will have a chance of survival...

"[Captain's Fury] confirms Butcher's mastery of action-filled fiction." - Booklist

"Butcher deftly deploys intrigue, conflicted loyalties, and hairbreadth action to excellent effect." - Publisher's Weekly

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
