A WIZARD IN BEDLAM

Melange was a successful planetary colony - for the very rich.  Its population - except for the aristocracy - consisted of miserable serfs and perpetual servants.  What was worse, they were all identical.  For the underlings were clones - living replicas of the faithful few that had been brought along to serve the masters.

Dirk Dulaine had started life as one of them, but he had been taken offplanet and trained to be a troublemaker.  His task was to become the Robespierre of the Melange Revolution, if that was possible.

But it wasn't to be easy - not when the population had been bred to behave like programmed mechanisms.  Dirk's efforts and his encounters on his home world have the spark and zest that made Stasheff's first novels The Warlock in Spite of Himself and King Kobold the classics they have become.  DAW Books is happy to bring you the first new Stasheff book in years - an adventure-packed, surprise-filled science fiction novel.

Christopher Stasheff
Birth: 15 Jan 1944 Mount Vernon, New York, USA
Death: 10 Jun 2018 Champaign, Illinois, USA

Notes:
From the "About the Author" secton in Mind Out of TIme:

Christopher Stasheff (1944 - 2018) spent his early childhood in Mount Vernon, New York, but spent the rest of his formative years in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He always had difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality and has tried to compromise by teaching college.  When teaching proved too real, he gave it up in favor of writing full time.  He wrote novels because it was the only way he could be the director, the designer, and all the actors too.  He tended to prescript his life, but couldn't understand why other people never get their lines right.  This caused a fair amount of misunderstanding with his wife and four children.  He seeks refuge in fantasy worlds of his own making, and hopes you enjoy them as much as he does.

Christopher died in 2018 from Parkinson's Disease.  He will be remembered by his friends, family, fans, and students for his kind and gentle nature, willingness to guide and mentor any who asked, and for his witty sense of humor.  His terrible puns, however, will be forgotten as soon as humanly possible.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
