THE MAGIC
GOES AWAY

ONCE THERE WAS MAGIC IN THE WORLD...
But hordes of selfish, short-sighted magicians have used up the mana that moved the world, and the magic goes away.  Even the most powerful spells are fast becomming futile, and so Orolandes, sad Achaean with half a sword, goes on a quest in search of the lost power.

But all the gods and Fait Atlantis are dead.  The creatures of spirit, the unicorns and centaurs, are dying.  Soon all the sparkling things will be gone from the world and only clay will remain - and those damned stupid barbarians with their damned stupid swords will win after all...
This is an illustrated science-fantasy novel such as only the pre-eminent author of hard science fiction, Larry Niven, could create.  We at Ace are proud of it, and we felt compelled to publish it first in a special large-size format - in which is spent six month in FIRST place on the trade-sf bestseller list! Now it is available for the first time in a mass-market edition.  Not one word has been changed, not one Estedan Maroto's incredibly beautiful interior illustrations has been omitted.
"LARRY NIVEN WRITES THE BEST AND MOST CONSISTENT FANTASIES SINCE LEWIS CARROLL. OBVIOUSLY I'M NOT UNPREJUDICED, BUT DAMN IT, HE'S JUST INCREDIBLY GOOD.  AND THE MAGIC GOES AWAY IS HIS BEST FANTASY YET.  READ IT!" - JERRY POURNELLE co-author of LUCIFER'S HAMMER

 Larry Niven
Birth: 30 Apr 1938 Los Angeles, California, USA
Notes:
Larry Niven is the pen name of Laurence van Cott Niven.  He was born in 1938 in California.  He received a Bachelor's of Science in mathematics from Washburn University in Kansas.  His first publication was "The Coldest Place" for If in 1964.  He has since written many books including those in his Tales of Known Space series which also began in "The Coldest Place".
From Beowulf's Children:

Born April 30, 1938 in Los Angeles, California. Attended California Institute of Technology; flunked out after discovering a book store jammed with used science fiction magazines.  Graduated Washburn University, Kansas, June 1962: BA in Mathematics with a Minor in Psychology, and later received an honorary doctorate in Letters from Washburn. Interests: Science fiction conventions, role playing games, AAAS meetings and other gatherings of people at the cutting edges of science. Comics. Filk singing. Yoga and other approaches to longevity. Moving mankind into space by any means, but particularly by making space endeavors attractive to commercial interests. Several times we’ve hosted The Citizens Advisory Council for a National Space Policy. I grew up with dogs. I live with a cat, and borrow dogs to hike with. I have passing acquaintance with raccoons and ferrets. Associating with nonhumans has certainly gained me insight into alien intelligences.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
