Synopsis* (may contain spoilers)
The novel "Balance of Power" by Dafydd ab Hugh is set in the world of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The book is a part of the Pocket Books series that explores the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D and its crew.

The story begins with the Enterprise-D arriving at the planet Oberon in response to a distress signal. However, when they arrive, they are immediately ambushed by a group of alien ships. The aliens, known as the Danteri, have been attacking Oberon and other planets in the region for several months. The Enterprise-D is no match for the Danteri ships, and Captain Picard is forced to order a retreat.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Enterprise-D crew discovers that the Danteri have been using a new weapon called a "gravitic disruptor." The weapon is capable of causing massive damage to ships and planets by disrupting the fabric of space itself. The Enterprise-D is tasked with finding a way to counter the weapon before the Danteri can cause more destruction.

At the same time, the Enterprise-D is also dealing with internal conflicts. Commander Riker is struggling with his command abilities and is constantly at odds with his second-in-command, Lt. Commander Data. Meanwhile, Wesley Crusher, who is serving as an ensign aboard the Enterprise-D, is struggling with his place on the ship and his relationship with his mother, Dr. Crusher.

As the Enterprise-D continues its search for a way to counter the gravitic disruptor, they discover that the weapon is powered by a rare mineral called deuterium-tritium. The Danteri are mining the mineral on a nearby planet and using it to power their ships and weapons. The Enterprise-D is sent to the planet to try and disrupt the mining operation.

However, the mission goes awry when the Enterprise-D is discovered by the Danteri. The crew is divided on how to proceed, with Riker and Data advocating for a direct assault while Picard, Dr. Crusher, and Wesley urge caution and diplomacy. Ultimately, Riker and Data are overruled, and the Enterprise-D attempts to negotiate with the Danteri.

The negotiations quickly turn hostile, and the Enterprise-D is once again forced to engage the Danteri ships in battle. However, the crew has developed a plan to disrupt the gravitic disruptor using a controlled explosion. The plan is successful, and the Danteri ships are disabled.

With the threat of the Danteri neutralized, the Enterprise-D returns to Oberon to help rebuild the planet. Riker comes to the realization that he needs to trust Data and delegate responsibilities in order to be an effective commander. Wesley also gains a newfound confidence and acceptance of his role on the Enterprise-D.

"Balance of Power" is a thrilling adventure that explores the themes of leadership, teamwork, and diplomacy. The novel also delves into the personal struggles of the Enterprise-D crew, adding depth to the story. Overall, "Balance of Power" is a must-read for any Star Trek: The Next Generation fan.

BALANCE OF POWER

When a famous Federation scientist dies, his son puts his inventions up for sale to the highest bidder - whether Federation, Klingon, Romulan or Cardassian.  Among the items at auction are medical devices, engeneering advances - and a photon pulse canon capable of punching through a starship's shields with a single shot.

Meanwhile, at the Academy, Wesley Crusher comes to the aide of his best friend - and finds himself kidnapped by outlaw Ferengi bent on controlling the universe through commerce.  When they also set their sights on the photon canon, Captain Picard must find a way to save the Starship Enterprise™ and the Federation from the deadliest weapon ever known - with every race in the galaxy aligned against them!

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
