Assessment I saw Mrs. Burns in subspecialty consultation on October 16, 1997. Mrs. Burns, at the time, was admitted to Saint Mary's Hospital under the care of our Neurology Service; her supervising consultants had included Dr. David Dodick and Dr. John Noseworthy. The patient had been referred to the Mayo Medical Center for evaluation of a previously undiagnosed neurologic disease. The patient had a number of symptoms and signs which could have been explained by a variety of diagnoses. For this reason, a comprehensive evaluation was undertaken. This evaluation eventually led to a definitive diagnosis of Niemann-Pick Disease, Type C. I emphasized that the patient had no diagnosis prior to her referral to Mayo Clinic, and the evaluation that was performed was essential to making a definitive neurologic diagnosis. Marc C.
