Recap

AP Recap

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Taurean Henderson was sure he scored on the final play of Texas Tech's game against Oklahoma.

Still, he had a few anxious moments as officials looked at a replay to determine if the running back for the 21st-ranked Red Raiders had gotten over the goal line.

"I was very confident. You never know, though. I was a little nervous, too," Henderson said of his 2-yard run that gave the Red Raiders a 23-21 win over the Sooners on Saturday. "I started out to score the touchdown, got hit, was laying on top of someone and just stretched out."

Henderson took the handoff with 2 seconds remaining and went up the middle. The play was reviewed but the touchdown call was upheld, giving Tech coach Mike Leach his first victory in six tries against former boss Bob Stoops. Leach was Oklahoma's offensive coordinator in 1999.

On television replays, multiple camera angles from the near side and one from behind and above the end zone seemed inconclusive. There were no angles from the far side of field, where the official who made the TD call was positioned.

Stoops did not dispute the call and said it will not be used as an excuse for losing.

"I didn't see it and I'm not going to sit here and criticize," he said. "We have a system in place and you hope that it works and it makes the calls that are correct."

Tech (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) trailed 21-17 when it got the ball at its own 35 with 1:33 remaining and no timeouts.

Cody Hodges completed passes of 26 and 7 yards to Robert Johnson and an 18-yarder to Danny Amendola to help get the Red Raiders to the Oklahoma 5 with 13 seconds remaining.

Moments later, Henderson went in for the winning score.

After the touchdown, stadium officials took down the goalposts to prevent fans from ripping them down. But game officials made them raise the posts back up for the extra point try. Tech snapped the ball and never attempted the kick, ending the game.

Three plays were reviewed in the 13-play drive, including a bobbled TD pass from Hodges to Joel Filani that was ruled incomplete.

"It was a great team win," Leach said. "It wasn't pretty at times, but it was a win where we got contributions from all three sides."

Oklahoma (6-4, 5-2) took the late lead when Adrian Peterson ran 13 yards for a score to cap a 51-yard drive. Peterson finished with 108 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. As time expired, Peterson sat atop OU's bench helmet on with his hands on either side of his head.

Henderson, who rushed for minus-6 yards last week in Tech's 24-17 loss to Oklahoma State, finished with 109 yards on 16 carries. But his final run was his biggest of the day.

"He leads the conference in all-purpose yards, and he proved he could get two all-purpose yards at a key time," Leach said.

Tech's running game hurt the Sooners, especially in the first half.

"That was a big factor, I thought the biggest factor, in the first half," Stoops said. "But we knew coming in that Taurean Henderson was an excellent player. He made some awfully good plays and we missed some tackles."

Hodges threw for 232 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was his second-lowest yardage total this season. He threw for 227 yards against Indiana State earlier this season.

It was only the second time Tech has scored more than one offensive touchdown against Oklahoma under Leach. In 2003, OU won 56-25 when Tech quarterback B.J. Symons threw five interceptions and the score was 42-10 by early in second half.

Hodges, who is a fifth-year senior, has watched four of Oklahoma's five straight wins from the sidelines. He did not hide his glee at giving Leach his first win over Oklahoma since he arrived in Lubbock in 2000.

"I have been here for five years and until this game they have dominated us for four years," he said. "It hasn't even been close."

The loss broke a four-game winning streak for the Sooners. They last lost to No. 2 Texas 45-12 in Dallas early last month.

Penalties hurt Oklahoma in the second half. With Tech leading 10-7, Rufus Alexander was called for a roughing penalty against Hodges after Hodges threw an incomplete pass to Filani in the end zone on third-and-8 from the Sooners 30.

On the next play, Chijioke Onyenegecha was called for interference while defending Jarrett Hicks in the end zone. That took Tech to the 3 and Hodges hit Bristol Alma to put the Red Raiders up 17-7 with 14:35 remaining in the game.

But the Sooners closed within 17-14 a short time later. They converted three third downs during an 89-yard drive and scored on a 13-yard TD pass from Rhett Bomar to Malcolm Kelly.
