This was the first novelisation paperback release of 1980 and, with its successor, it established a precedent in that year of books coming out followed immediately by the novelisation of the TV show that followed. Later in the year, Nightmare of Eden was followed by The Horns of Nimon, and there was the very impressive scheduling of The Stones of Blood, followed by The Androids of Tara, followed by The Power of Kroll and rounded off with The Armageddon Factor. Underworld was of course followed by The Invasion of Time... Cover Data
Bill Donohoe is credited on the back cover. Alongside Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor, his cover shows Alan Lake as Herrick and an aged Imogen Bickford-Smith as Tala. This was the only cover ever produced for Doctor Who and the Underworld. Reviews
"Underworld is a story which... works better in book form than on the screen because here one can visualise the scenes as they should have been, rather than as hey did appear. None of the poor sets or the awful special effects show up here, so the story ultimately benefits."
