A bitter wind blew, colder than charity.  Even if you were protected by a heated space suit, it still seemed to chill you to the bone.  Or perhaps that was just the effect of the dead landscape - an immense plain broken here and there by short, jagged outcrops of rock: mostly quartz and granite.  Everything else had been worn away.

The surface of Argolis was gritty underfoot and covered with a kind of coarse dust, a couple of centimetres thick.  It was like walking on ash, which is precisely what the surface layer was composed of - ash and cold cinders.

The colours which blazed in the sky overhead somehow made the scene look even more desolate.  Once outside the Leisure Hive you realized that the air - or at least the gales that roared across the planet - were full of tiny fragments of glittering dust which reflected and refracted light from Argolis' suns.

Somewhere in this brilliant world of colour ash stirred and rose and was snatched away in the wind.  Webbed feet left tracks which were instantly erased.  Something was moving cautiously across the barren plain in the direction of the Hive.

They - for by now it was clear there were at least two of them - had planned their advance with care.  Out of sight of the great observation domes, which erupted from the building like enormous transparent blisters and were crowded with holidaymakers, they approached the rear of the Hive.  They followed the wall round to where the storerooms, offices, laboratories and other service areas were located.  There they attached a sensor to the exterior wall, and listened.

There was the sound of movement within; some Argolin was checking equipment in a storeroom.  They waited patiently under the lee of the wall, their breathing harsh and laboured in the poisonous air of Argolis.  At last, when their detector confirmed that the Argolin had gone and the storeroom beyond was empty, they began work.

Getting into the Hive took a matter of minutes.  They attached a small box to the wall, then drew it slowly down the side of the Hive, so that it traced out a circle - a circle large enough to permit their access.  Inside, in the darkness of the storeroom, the circular lines glowed and the wall itself bubbled as if attacked by acid.  When the circle was complete, a slight pressure from a clawed hand was enough to push the segment of wall inwards.  The figures entered the Hive.  They replaced the cut fragment of wall and, using the same device, reversed the cutting process.  The opening was sealed shut, and to the casual observer there was no sign it had ever existed.

Fact and Findings
Original script writer David Fisher's second and final Doctor Who novelisation. (His first was Doctor Who and the Creature from the Pit.) Written with more than a touch of both The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Monty Python thrown in.

First edition cover price - £1.25

The first edition mistakenly claims to be A STAR BOOK at the foot of the inside title page.

Classic chapter title: Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall (not very inspired, I know, but a weak selection to chose from)

Christine Donougher was Target editor for this release and Fisher's manuscript was copy-edited by Martin Noble on the 1st of March 1982 - a process for checking spelling, punctuation, grammar, consistency and clarity. (Noble was an author in his own right who would later do some non-Who novelisations for Target and Star, including one based on the Glen A. Larson show Automan).

The last book to be classified as Children's Fiction on the back cover. The classification from here on was TV Tie-in.

The book was part of The Second Doctor Who Gift Set boxed set, released in 1982. The four novels were The Leisure Hive, Full Circle, The Keeper of Traken and The Visitation.

Later releases numbered the book number 39 in the Doctor Who library.

Originally published by W. H. Allen, ISBN 0 426 20147 7. The book was rejacketed and reprinted for the final time, by Virgin Publishing, on the 21st of October 1993. The cover price was £3.50 and the ISBN was retained.

The Virgin reprint was retitled Doctor Who - The Leisure Hive on the cover, on the spine and on page three. On the flyleaf it remains Doctor Who and the Leisure Hive.
Cover Data
The original cover shows David Haig as Pangol, whereas the final cover shows Tom Baker, in aged make-up, as the fourth Doctor. Both covers feature the elements of the Hive itself and a single Foamasi.

A larger version of Alister Pearson's artwork can be found on page 77 of David Howe's book Timeframe (Virgin Publishing, 1993).
Reviews
"With this novelisation it is made clear right from the start that Mr Fisher certainly knows where he's going with this book. The Leisure Hive has much in common with The Cave Monsters and Enemy of the World, in that the authors take the basis of their books from the television stories but then add something new and thus exciting to the story. Normally, as in this case, this can only be seen to happen when the author and original script-writer are one and the same person.
The story opens marvelously with most of the 'action' seen from the point of view of the deck-chair attendant and his friend the candy-floss man.The next chapetr is devoted to the history of Argolis and a rather amusing Argolin duelling tale. As such it is a sheer joy to read."
- 'Definitie Gaze' (number 2), late 1982

"The fact that Loman was given some lines (of dialogue) made his death more interesting. A great pity that Loman's death with fountains of blood was not extended to the serial."
- Stuart Donaldson, 'Shada' (number 11), August/September 1982

DAVID FISHER

David Fisher first wrote for Doctor Who for the sixteenth season, penning two instalments of the search for the Key to Time. Two more adventures followed. He had previously worked with Who script editor Anthony Read on The Troubleshooters.

His first two scripts were novelised by Terrance Dicks, but Fisher himself did the work for his last two.

Doctor Who and the Creature from the Pit
Doctor Who and the Leisure Hive

The association with Tony Read continued, when Fisher wrote for the Hammer House of Horror series. The episode was Guardian of the Abyss, starred Paul (Silurians/Timelash) Darrow and was transmitted in November 1980. He also wrote two episodes for the Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense in 1984.

The two collaborated again throughout the 1980s and 1990s on a series of non-fiction books about world history. The books are Operation Lucy (the most secret spy ring of the Second World War), Deadly Embrace (Hitler, Stalin & the Nazi-Soviet Pact, 1939-1941), Colonel Z (the secret life of a master of spies), Kristallnacht (the unleashing of the Holocaust), The Proudest Day (India's long road to independence), Berlin Rising and The Fall of Berlin. The books were published in the US and the UK.

Box Set

Formed part of The Second Dr Who Gift Set released in 1982. These sets comprised four recently released (or re-released) novelisations in a cardboard slip case. The four novels that made up the second set were The Leisure Hive, Full Circle, Warriors' Gate and The Visitation. The box set cover utilised the Bill Donohoe artwork from The Programme Guide. The gift set had ISBN 0 426 19289 3 and it sold for £5.25. In all there were nine gift sets released in between 1982 and 1986. The first and second were flimsy cardboard slip cases but the remainder were quite sturdy.
  • On Target was a website dedicated to the Target Novelizations of Doctor Who and had a lot of information on each book.
  • I cannot find it anywhere on the web now so I have used the Wayback Machine to get information for these books.
  • I originally had permission to use covers from On Target, for books that I do not own, on this site.
  • Anything that idicates that a book is owned within the "On Target" section is referring to the owner of that site and not to my library.
  • This is currently unfinished, but a work in progress...

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
